Presidential Update - Spring 2025

Dear 91成人导航入口 Alumni,

It was great to see so many of you at Alumni Weekend this year, and judging by the stories and laughter I heard, it was a good time for all who made the journey back to campus.

It was especially fun for our 鈥80s graduates as well as the classes of 2015, 2000 and the Golden Petrels of 1975. Our Advancement team led by Vice President Sarah Emerson did an amazing job, and I am grateful to Senior Director of Alumni Engagement and Giving Kathryn Henderson 鈥17 and her team of Alyssa Merletti 鈥23, Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement, and Student Assistant Rachel Malone 鈥27.

As we head into the final weeks of Spring Semester 2025, I want to provide important updates, some of which I was able to share Saturday during the Petrels with the President presentation.

First, I want to encourage you to take advantage of the many opportunities to connect as we sprint toward Commencement on May 3. We have an outstanding lineup of impressive speakers and events coming soon:

  • Support Stormy Petrel Spring sports: baseball, women鈥檚 and men鈥檚 lacrosse, men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 track and field, women鈥檚 and men鈥檚 golf, and women鈥檚 and men鈥檚 tennis teams.
  • Spring 2025 Rikard Lecture: Greg Adams 鈥79, chair and chief executive officer of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals, Cousins Center Atrium, 4 p.m., April 15
  • Liberal Arts and Sciences Symposium (LASS) Lecture:  Hala Moddelmog, CEO of the Woodruff Arts Center, 1 p.m., April 16

We recently welcomed 2012 graduate Aline Mello back as our featured poet at the 91成人导航入口 Out Loud poetry event made by possible by a generous gift from 1988 alumna Professor Leah Hughes. This was the second annual event after last year鈥檚 inaugural reading by renown poet Willie Perdomo, and Aline was a delight to the crowd and students alike. You should check out her work and her book, 鈥淢ore Salt Than Diamond,鈥 at .

Next, it鈥檚 my pleasure to announce that the Board of Trustees and Faculty Council have approved Carol Tom茅, CEO of Atlanta-based United Parcel Service (UPS), to deliver the keynote address and receive an honorary degree at Commencement May 3. Ms. Tom茅 has a strong commitment to higher education and will offer a memorable and inspiring speech to our graduates.

Finally, I am pleased to inform you that after a national search, Ginger Fay has accepted our offer and will assume the responsibilities of Vice President of Enrollment Management effective June 1, 2025. This is a strategic hire that will capitalize on the momentum built by Interim Vice President Whitney Lewis whose efforts have produced a record number of applications and an increase in deposits year-over-year at this point in the recruitment cycle. I am grateful for Whitney鈥檚 expertise and happy to announce that she has agreed to stay on in a contract capacity to assist Ginger with the transition and work on enrollment marketing. With Ginger, I believe we have the leadership to attract and enroll excellent students who will thrive at 91成人导航入口.

There is much to be done between now and May 3. I鈥檓 proud to be working alongside our faculty, staff and you, our supportive alumni, as together we fulfill our mission of teaching excellence, inclusive learning, and preparing students for success as responsible members of a global society.

I look forward to seeing you at an alumni event soon and welcome you back to campus any time. Thank you for all the ways you stay engaged with 91成人导航入口!

OU Giving Day is a Success

In a cold, steady rain on Feb. 12, the 91成人导航入口 community, both on campus and around the world, demonstrated the persistence of a Stormy Petrel and the commitment to the humanitarian ideals of namesake James Edward 91成人导航入口.

Not only did the campus community carry on the 91成人导航入口 Day traditions, but alumni and friends showed a record-setting outpouring of support for the university by donating $213,732 on OU Giving Day, which coincided with 91成人导航入口 Day.

Despite the cancellation of the beloved tradition of the Petrels of Fire footrace on the quad and bagpiper-led procession to the Conant Performing Arts Center by class years, a crowd of students, faculty and staff filled Lupton Auditorium for lunch, the annual lecture and Coke floats.

Sarah Opp Carter 鈥06 and her husband, Josh, delivered this year鈥檚 keynote address in which they drew upon their grandparents鈥, former President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, commitment to public service. They shared life lessons as well as their experience in founding a nonprofit foundation dedicated to supporting families with children diagnosed with Very Early Onset Inflammatory Bowel Disease (VEO-IBD). Even though they were served inside, Coke floats remained the traditional follow-up to the lecture.

鈥淲e built our foundation from the lessons we learned from my grandparents,鈥 said Josh. 鈥淭hey believed that someone from a small community could change the world鈥攁nd they proved it.鈥

Sarah graduated summa cum laude from 91成人导航入口 with an honors degree in history in 2006. She went on to earn a master鈥檚 degree in international peace and conflict resolution from American University. She now works as chief operations officer at the nonprofit she and Josh founded, the . Josh serves as the chief executive officer of the VEO-IBD Foundation. Their youngest son, Jonathan, was diagnosed with the condition when he was an infant.

Josh is the former president鈥檚 and first lady鈥檚 fourth grandchild and the oldest son of Jeff and Annette Carter. He is a small business owner and the writer, producer and host of the , in which he talks about his life in a Presidential family and the American values taught to him by his grandparents. The Carters live in Atlanta with their two boys, Charlie and Jonathan.

鈥淲hen I was studying history at 91成人导航入口, I had no idea where my career path would go. I couldn鈥檛 imagine that I would start a non-profit, or volunteer as an election observer, or sit on a stage like this and talk to students sitting in the seats where I once sat,鈥 said Sarah.

鈥淚t鈥檚 OK if you don鈥檛 know what you want to do, but I firmly believe we can all do something to make the world a better place,鈥 she said.

91成人导航入口 Day recognizes the legacy of the university鈥檚 namesake, General James Edward 91成人导航入口. A philanthropist, military leader, and member of Parliament, 91成人导航入口 was regarded as one of Britain鈥檚 most active 18th century humanitarians. This day marks the anniversary of the arrival of 91成人导航入口 in Georgia in 1733.

Gifts went to 12 funds from 265 donors and a record 176 alumni, representing classes from 1958 to 2024. An additional 24 graduating seniors also made gifts, and the combined giving unlocked all eight of the challenge matches, including challenges from President Kathryn McClymond, the Alumni Board, the President鈥檚 Advisory Council, Harsinie Panditaratne 鈥01, Jason Solomon 鈥01, and Board members Dave Pass 鈥98 and Lauren Warner 鈥01.

鈥淚t was a historic day on campus, and our students benefited from Sarah and Josh sharing their story of making a difference,鈥 McClymond said. 鈥淲e are grateful for the generosity our alumni, friends, faculty, staff and graduating seniors displayed in giving to 91成人导航入口. These gifts help us continue to build momentum and allow us to do so much to achieve our mission. Thank you to all who continue to give and stay engaged in the life of the university.鈥
